Sugar Pine Tree Seeds | (Pinus lambertiana)

Sugar Pine Tree Seeds | (Pinus lambertiana)

The king of all pines. The longest cones on Earth.

Pinus lambertiana, the Sugar Pine, is the largest pine species in the world by height and produces the longest cones of any conifer on Earth, elegant cylinders that can reach 24 inches in length that hang from the branch tips like ornaments. It grows in the Sierra Nevada and Cascade ranges of California and Oregon where it can exceed 200 feet in height and develops a characteristic wide, spreading crown at maturity that is visible from miles away across mountain valleys. Its sweet, crystallized resin, which oozes from wounds and hardens into a sugar-like substance, gave the tree its common name and was eaten by Indigenous peoples of the Sierra Nevada for centuries. If you are looking to buy Sugar Pine seeds or grow this magnificent pine from seed, this is the tree that John Muir called the most beautiful and majestic pine in the world.

  • The largest pine species in the world, capable of exceeding 200 feet in its native Sierra Nevada range
  • Produces the longest cones of any conifer, elegant cylinders reaching up to 24 inches in length
  • Sweet crystallized resin historically eaten by Sierra Nevada Indigenous peoples
  • Magnificent wide-spreading crown at maturity, visible across mountain valleys
  • Fast-growing for a large pine, establishing quickly and building significant height within decades

Things you probably did not know about the Sugar Pine

John Muir called it the king of all pines. In his accounts of the Sierra Nevada, John Muir described the Sugar Pine repeatedly with superlatives that he reserved for almost nothing else in the forest. He wrote of its large, round, open gracefulness and described stumbling upon a grove of mature Sugar Pines as one of the most moving experiences in his decades of wilderness travel. Coming from the most eloquent observer of the natural world in American history, this level of praise is significant.

The cones are so long and heavy they pull the branch tips downward. The weight of a mature Sugar Pine cone, which can exceed a pound, causes the branch tips that bear them to droop visibly toward the ground. In a grove of mature Sugar Pines bearing a full crop of cones, the visual effect of dozens of foot-long cones hanging from every branch tip is one of the most spectacular sights in any conifer forest.

The resin crystals were a trade commodity among Sierra Nevada tribes. The sweet resin that hardens on the bark and in wounds of Sugar Pine trees was harvested, traded, and prized as a sweetener by Indigenous peoples of the Sierra Nevada before any other sweetener was available in the region. John Muir described encountering Indian camps where Sugar Pine resin was collected and traded, noting that the sweet flavor was genuine and pleasant. The resin contains sugars, primarily pinitol, that are responsible for the sweetness.

It is highly susceptible to white pine blister rust, making cultivation a conservation act. Cronartium ribicola, an invasive fungal disease introduced to North America from Asia in the early 20th century, has killed millions of Sugar Pines and continues to threaten wild populations. Selecting for rust-resistant individuals and growing Sugar Pines in cultivation is part of an ongoing conservation effort to preserve the genetics of this irreplaceable species.

FAQ

Do you pre-stratify the seeds?

Most of our seeds are not pre-stratified. We ship them unstratified so you can control germination timing based on your local growing season. We sell to all 50 U.S. states and Canadian provinces, and since each region has different planting windows, pre-stratifying would risk seeds germinating in transit or before you're ready to plant.

True stratification requires cold, moist conditions, which can lead to premature sprouting or mold if not timed properly. To avoid this, we store most seeds in dry cold conditions to preserve viability — but this does not initiate stratification.

Do any of your seeds need to stay moist? (Recalcitrant seeds)

Yes — some species we offer are recalcitrant, meaning they must remain moist to stay viable and cannot be dried out. Examples include: Chestnut, Hazelnut, Paw Paw, etc.

These seeds are shipped in moist cold storage and are clearly labeled on the product page when applicable. Please refrigerate immediately upon arrival and follow included care instructions.

Do you ship internationally?

We currently ship to the United States and Canada only. Unfortunately, we cannot ship to other countries without a phytosanitary certificate, which is required by most international customs agencies.

If you're interested in shipping outside North America, please contact us. Note that a phytosanitary certificate typically adds $60–$80 USD per seed type and must be arranged in advance.
