Foxtail Palm Seeds | Foxtail Palm Tree Seeds | (Wodyetia bifurcata)

The cleanest tropical silhouette. A perfect crown of feathery fronds. Instant resort energy.

Wodyetia bifurcata, the Foxtail Palm, is one of the most striking and refined ornamental palms in cultivation, producing a smooth, straight trunk topped with a perfectly symmetrical crown of arching, plumose fronds that resemble the tail of a fox, giving the tree its common name. Native to a small region of northeastern Australia, it was only introduced into cultivation in the late 20th century and rapidly became one of the most widely planted tropical landscape palms due to its clean form, moderate size, and exceptional visual impact. The fronds are densely packed with leaflets that radiate in all directions, creating a full, soft, three-dimensional texture unlike the flatter fronds of most other palms. If you are looking to buy Foxtail Palm seeds or grow this modern tropical icon from seed, this is the palm that defines contemporary warm-climate landscapes.

  • Distinctive foxtail-like fronds with densely arranged leaflets radiating in all directions
  • Smooth, straight gray trunk with a clean, ringed appearance and prominent green crownshaft
  • Moderate height palm ideal for residential landscapes compared to taller coconut or royal palms
  • Fast-growing in warm climates, establishing quickly and creating immediate visual impact
  • One of the most popular modern landscape palms for tropical and subtropical regions

Things you probably did not know about the Foxtail Palm

It was virtually unknown to science until the 1970s despite being locally known to Indigenous Australians. Wodyetia bifurcata was formally described by botanists only in 1978, even though it had been known and used by Aboriginal Australians for generations. Its late scientific recognition is unusual for such a visually distinctive tree and reflects its extremely limited natural range in remote areas of Queensland.

The genus name Wodyetia honors an Aboriginal elder who helped botanists locate the species. The palm was named after “Wodyeti,” an Aboriginal man who guided botanists to the tree in its native habitat. This naming is a rare and direct acknowledgment of Indigenous knowledge in botanical discovery and classification.

The seeds are buoyant and can disperse by water in coastal environments. Foxtail Palm seeds are capable of floating and surviving periods in water, allowing natural dispersal along waterways and coastal zones. This adaptation helps explain how the species maintains populations in fragmented habitats.

It is self-cleaning, shedding old fronds naturally without pruning. Unlike many palms that retain dead fronds, Foxtail Palm drops its old fronds cleanly from the trunk, maintaining its smooth, uncluttered appearance with minimal maintenance. This trait is one of the key reasons it became a preferred landscape palm in residential and commercial plantings.

FAQ

Do you pre-stratify the seeds?

Most of our seeds are not pre-stratified. We ship them unstratified so you can control germination timing based on your local growing season. We sell to all 50 U.S. states and Canadian provinces, and since each region has different planting windows, pre-stratifying would risk seeds germinating in transit or before you're ready to plant.

True stratification requires cold, moist conditions, which can lead to premature sprouting or mold if not timed properly. To avoid this, we store most seeds in dry cold conditions to preserve viability — but this does not initiate stratification.

Do any of your seeds need to stay moist? (Recalcitrant seeds)

Yes — some species we offer are recalcitrant, meaning they must remain moist to stay viable and cannot be dried out. Examples include: Chestnut, Hazelnut, Paw Paw, etc.

These seeds are shipped in moist cold storage and are clearly labeled on the product page when applicable. Please refrigerate immediately upon arrival and follow included care instructions.

Do you ship internationally?

We currently ship to the United States and Canada only. Unfortunately, we cannot ship to other countries without a phytosanitary certificate, which is required by most international customs agencies.

If you're interested in shipping outside North America, please contact us. Note that a phytosanitary certificate typically adds $60–$80 USD per seed type and must be arranged in advance.
