Dwarf Palmetto Tree Seeds | Blue Palmetto | (Sabal minor)

Dwarf Palmetto Tree Seeds | Blue Palmetto | (Sabal minor)

The hardiest palm in North America. A tropical look that survives real winters.

Sabal minor, the Dwarf Palmetto or Blue Palmetto, is one of the most cold-hardy palms in the world, native to the southeastern United States and capable of surviving temperatures well below freezing while maintaining a distinctly tropical appearance. Unlike towering palms, this species typically grows as a trunkless or low-trunk palm, with large, fan-shaped fronds emerging directly from the ground to create a lush, architectural presence in the landscape. Its foliage often carries a subtle blue-green cast, especially in full sun, giving rise to the name Blue Palmetto. Exceptionally adaptable, it thrives in everything from dry upland soils to wet, swampy conditions and is one of the few palms that can be grown successfully across much of the eastern United States. If you are looking to buy Dwarf Palmetto seeds or grow Sabal minor from seed, this is the palm that brings a true subtropical aesthetic to temperate gardens without the risk of winter loss.

Things you probably did not know about the Dwarf Palmetto

It naturally grows in swamps and floodplains. Sabal minor is commonly found in wet bottomlands, floodplains, and swampy forests across the southeastern United States, making it one of the few palms that not only tolerates but thrives in saturated soils and periodic flooding conditions.

It can survive temperatures below 0°F once established. While most palms are limited to frost-free climates, established Sabal minor specimens have been documented surviving extreme cold events, making it a reliable option for gardeners far outside traditional palm-growing regions.

It flowers and fruits at ground level. Because the plant lacks a tall trunk, its long flower stalks emerge from near the base of the plant, producing clusters of small, creamy-white flowers followed by dark fruit, often hidden within the foliage.

It has been used traditionally for weaving and thatching. Indigenous peoples and early settlers used the tough, fibrous fronds for making baskets, mats, and thatched coverings, taking advantage of the plant’s durability and availability in wetland environments.

FAQ

Do you pre-stratify the seeds?

Most of our seeds are not pre-stratified. We ship them unstratified so you can control germination timing based on your local growing season. We sell to all 50 U.S. states and Canadian provinces, and since each region has different planting windows, pre-stratifying would risk seeds germinating in transit or before you're ready to plant.

True stratification requires cold, moist conditions, which can lead to premature sprouting or mold if not timed properly. To avoid this, we store most seeds in dry cold conditions to preserve viability — but this does not initiate stratification.

Do any of your seeds need to stay moist? (Recalcitrant seeds)

Yes — some species we offer are recalcitrant, meaning they must remain moist to stay viable and cannot be dried out. Examples include: Chestnut, Hazelnut, Paw Paw, etc.

These seeds are shipped in moist cold storage and are clearly labeled on the product page when applicable. Please refrigerate immediately upon arrival and follow included care instructions.

Do you ship internationally?

We currently ship to the United States and Canada only. Unfortunately, we cannot ship to other countries without a phytosanitary certificate, which is required by most international customs agencies.

If you're interested in shipping outside North America, please contact us. Note that a phytosanitary certificate typically adds $60–$80 USD per seed type and must be arranged in advance.
