Curl-leaf Mountain Mahogany Tree Seeds | (Cercocarpus ledifolius)

Curl-leaf Mountain Mahogany Tree Seeds | (Cercocarpus ledifolius)

The desert ironwood. The evergreen that lives for a thousand years.

Cercocarpus ledifolius, the Curl-leaf Mountain Mahogany, is one of the most remarkable native trees of the intermountain west, a small evergreen tree with extremely dense, iron-hard wood that grows on the dry mountain slopes and foothills of the Great Basin and Rocky Mountains at elevations from 4,000 to 10,000 feet where temperatures can swing 80 degrees between summer days and winter nights. Despite its common name it is not related to true mahogany but is a member of the rose family, producing tiny rose-like flowers and distinctive feathery-tailed seeds that spiral on the wind like corkscrew helicopters. Individual trees can live for over 1,000 years on exposed ridgelines where the combination of cold, drought, and thin soil creates conditions that almost nothing else can survive. If you are looking to buy Curl-leaf Mountain Mahogany seeds or grow this extraordinary western native from seed, this is the tree that carries a millennium of mountain time in its dense, slow-growing heartwood.

  • One of the longest-lived small trees in western North America, with documented specimens over 1,000 years old
  • Extraordinarily dense, iron-hard wood, one of the heaviest woods produced by any North American tree
  • Grows on exposed, rocky mountain slopes at elevations up to 10,000 feet with minimal soil and water
  • Evergreen, leathery leaves providing year-round foliage on mountain ridges where deciduous trees lose their leaves
  • Feathery-tailed seeds that spiral like corkscrews in the wind, one of the most distinctive seed dispersal mechanisms of any native tree

Things you probably did not know about the Curl-leaf Mountain Mahogany

The wood is so dense it sinks in water and burns like coal. Curl-leaf Mountain Mahogany wood has a specific gravity above 1.0, meaning it is denser than water and will sink rather than float, a characteristic shared with only a handful of North American wood species. The extreme density also gives it one of the highest BTU values of any native western wood, burning slow, hot, and long in a way that Indigenous peoples of the Great Basin and Rocky Mountains valued highly for winter warmth in high-elevation camps where other fuel was scarce.

It is the primary browse plant for mule deer and elk on winter ranges across the Great Basin. Curl-leaf Mountain Mahogany is evergreen, retaining its leaves through winter on the exposed ridgelines and slopes where deer and elk congregate during severe weather. The leaves provide critical protein and nutrition during the period of deepest snow and coldest temperatures when other food sources are buried. Wildlife biologists consider Curl-leaf Mountain Mahogany one of the most important native plants for maintaining mule deer and elk populations through severe mountain winters.

Indigenous peoples used the roots to produce a brown to rust-red dye. The roots of Curl-leaf Mountain Mahogany contain tannins and other compounds that produce a rich brown to rust-red dye when extracted in water. This dye was used by Navajo, Shoshone, Paiute, and other Great Basin and Southwest peoples for dyeing wool, basketry materials, and occasionally skin. The reddish tones produced by mountain mahogany root dye complemented the natural brown, tan, and ochre colors of traditional Great Basin craft materials.

The feathery-tailed seeds can travel considerable distances on wind. The characteristic of Cercocarpus seeds is the long, spiral, feathery tail, technically called an awn, that acts as both a parachute slowing the seed's descent and a corkscrew mechanism that drills the seed into the soil when it lands and the awn twists with changes in humidity. This hygroscopic drilling mechanism ensures that seeds landing on steep, rocky slopes actually embed themselves rather than rolling away, a specific adaptation to the difficult germination sites this species inhabits.

Growing Details

  • Botanical Name: Cercocarpus ledifolius
  • Stratification: Recommended, 30 to 60 days cold stratification
  • USDA Zones: 4 to 8
  • Soil: Well-drained, rocky, poor, dry, alkaline to neutral, excellent drainage essential
  • Light: Full sun
  • Height: 6 to 20 feet
  • Spread: 6 to 15 feet
  • Growth Rate: Very slow, 3 to 6 inches per year

Plant it in the driest, most exposed, most challenging site available and give it absolutely nothing but time. In two hundred years it will be the oldest living thing on the property by a considerable margin.

FAQ

Do you pre-stratify the seeds?

Most of our seeds are not pre-stratified. We ship them unstratified so you can control germination timing based on your local growing season. We sell to all 50 U.S. states and Canadian provinces, and since each region has different planting windows, pre-stratifying would risk seeds germinating in transit or before you're ready to plant.

True stratification requires cold, moist conditions, which can lead to premature sprouting or mold if not timed properly. To avoid this, we store most seeds in dry cold conditions to preserve viability — but this does not initiate stratification.

Do any of your seeds need to stay moist? (Recalcitrant seeds)

Yes — some species we offer are recalcitrant, meaning they must remain moist to stay viable and cannot be dried out. Examples include: Chestnut, Hazelnut, Paw Paw, etc.

These seeds are shipped in moist cold storage and are clearly labeled on the product page when applicable. Please refrigerate immediately upon arrival and follow included care instructions.

Do you ship internationally?

We currently ship to the United States and Canada only. Unfortunately, we cannot ship to other countries without a phytosanitary certificate, which is required by most international customs agencies.

If you're interested in shipping outside North America, please contact us. Note that a phytosanitary certificate typically adds $60–$80 USD per seed type and must be arranged in advance.
