Chinese Juniper Tree Seeds | Asiatic Juniper | (Juniperus chinensis)

Chinese Juniper Tree Seeds | Asiatic Juniper | (Juniperus chinensis)

The most versatile conifer in the world. The tree that launched a thousand bonsai.

Juniperus chinensis, the Chinese Juniper, is the most widely cultivated juniper species in the world and the primary juniper used in traditional Japanese and Chinese bonsai practice for centuries. In its natural form it grows as a large, upright to spreading conifer with dense, blue-green to gray-green foliage and attractive red-brown peeling bark that develops with age into a deeply furrowed, textured surface of great ornamental quality. It tolerates drought, urban pollution, alkaline soils, and severe pruning better than most conifers, which explains both its popularity in cultivation and its central role in bonsai, where it is subjected to the most aggressive shaping of any practiced art form. If you are looking to buy Chinese Juniper seeds or grow this versatile conifer from seed, each seed-grown specimen will develop its own unique foliage character and growth habit.

  • The most widely cultivated juniper species in the world and the primary juniper in traditional bonsai practice
  • Dense blue-green to gray-green foliage with attractive peeling bark developing rich texture with age
  • Extraordinary drought tolerance, urban adaptability, and tolerance for severe pruning
  • Seed-grown trees express natural genetic variation in foliage form between juvenile needle and mature scale-like types
  • Cold-hardy and adaptable across an enormous range of climates and soil conditions

Things you probably did not know about the Chinese Juniper

Some of the oldest known bonsai trees in the world are Chinese Junipers. The most famous individual bonsai tree currently known, the Sandai Shogun no Matsu at the Tokyo Imperial Palace, is a Japanese White Pine. But Chinese Juniper specimens in Japanese and Chinese temple collections include trees aged at over 400 years that have been maintained through continuous skilled care across multiple generations of practitioners. The tradition of Chinese Juniper bonsai is one of the longest continuously practiced art forms in existence.

The foliage changes type as the tree matures. Young Chinese Juniper plants produce juvenile foliage with sharp, needle-like leaves. As they mature, most specimens transition to scale-like adult foliage with a softer texture. Some individuals retain juvenile needle foliage throughout their lives, and others produce both types simultaneously. This variability is a consistent source of interest to bonsai practitioners who sometimes deliberately maintain juvenile foliage through specific pruning techniques.

The berries are used to flavor gin. The blue-black berry-like cones of various juniper species, including Chinese Juniper, contain the aromatic compounds responsible for the characteristic flavor of gin. The word gin derives from the Dutch genever, meaning juniper. While Juniperus communis is the primary gin juniper, Chinese Juniper berries have been used interchangeably in traditional spirit production across parts of Asia.

It tolerates air pollution better than almost any other conifer. Chinese Juniper has been documented in studies of urban air pollution tolerance to withstand sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxide, and particulate matter concentrations that damage or kill most other conifers. This tolerance makes it one of the most practical conifers for street planting, highway medians, and industrial landscape settings where most other species decline.

FAQ

Do you pre-stratify the seeds?

Most of our seeds are not pre-stratified. We ship them unstratified so you can control germination timing based on your local growing season. We sell to all 50 U.S. states and Canadian provinces, and since each region has different planting windows, pre-stratifying would risk seeds germinating in transit or before you're ready to plant.

True stratification requires cold, moist conditions, which can lead to premature sprouting or mold if not timed properly. To avoid this, we store most seeds in dry cold conditions to preserve viability — but this does not initiate stratification.

Do any of your seeds need to stay moist? (Recalcitrant seeds)

Yes — some species we offer are recalcitrant, meaning they must remain moist to stay viable and cannot be dried out. Examples include: Chestnut, Hazelnut, Paw Paw, etc.

These seeds are shipped in moist cold storage and are clearly labeled on the product page when applicable. Please refrigerate immediately upon arrival and follow included care instructions.

Do you ship internationally?

We currently ship to the United States and Canada only. Unfortunately, we cannot ship to other countries without a phytosanitary certificate, which is required by most international customs agencies.

If you're interested in shipping outside North America, please contact us. Note that a phytosanitary certificate typically adds $60–$80 USD per seed type and must be arranged in advance.
