Austrian Pine Tree Seeds | European Black Pine | (Pinus nigra)
Tough as the mountains it comes from. Reliable in every condition.
Pinus nigra, the Austrian Pine, is one of the most adaptable and resilient conifers you can plant. Native to the rugged mountains of Europe, it thrives in poor soils, wind exposure, drought, and urban stress where other pines fail. With dense, dark green needles and a strong, durable form, it delivers dependable structure, screening, and habitat across a wide range of challenging environments.
- Highly adaptable to poor, dry, rocky, or compacted soils
- Excellent salt tolerance for coastal and roadside planting
- Dense evergreen structure ideal for windbreaks and privacy
- Performs well in exposed, windy locations
- More resilient to common pine stresses than many alternatives
Things You Probably Didn’t Know
It thrives where others fail.
Austrian Pine tolerates pollution, road salt, and compacted soils better than most conifers, making it a reliable choice for urban and roadside environments.
The resin has a long history of use.
Traditional European uses of pine resin included treatments for wounds and respiratory issues, valued for its aromatic and protective properties.
It stands strong in heavy wind.
With a deep root system and strong lateral spread, Austrian Pine resists wind damage and remains stable in exposed conditions.
The cones linger for years.
Cones mature over two seasons and often remain on the tree long after opening, adding texture and providing food for birds.

FAQ
FAQ
Do you pre-stratify the seeds?
Most of our seeds are not pre-stratified. They are stored under dry, cold conditions to preserve viability without initiating stratification, allowing you to time germination for your local growing season.
The exception is recalcitrant seeds. Because these seeds must remain moist to stay viable, they are kept in moist, cold storage and are therefore in a pre-stratified state. Depending on how long a particular batch has been stored, some may arrive with an emerging radicle and be ready to plant immediately. Radicle development is not guaranteed.
Please refer to the individual product page and included growing instructions for species-specific requirements.
Do any of your seeds need to stay moist? (Recalcitrant seeds)
Yes. Some species we offer, including Chestnut, Hazelnut, and Paw Paw, are recalcitrant and must remain moist to stay viable.
Please refrigerate these seeds immediately upon arrival unless they have already developed a radicle. Seeds with an emerging radicle should be planted promptly.
Do you ship internationally?
No. We currently ship within the United States only.
We previously shipped to Canada, but tariffs, duties, and import fees resulted in customers receiving significant and unpredictable additional charges upon delivery. Because we cannot reliably calculate or absorb these costs, we have suspended shipping to Canada.
At this time, we do not ship to Canada or other international destinations.
